I'm debating on whether this book should have a three or four star.
I'm struggling to describe how I felt about this book, mostly because it is different from Diana Wynne Jones' other books. Not necessarily in topic, this is a Jones kind of topic, but in tone and technique, it's a bit apart from her other works. I think it's more somber, quieter. Less jubilant. This isn't to say that the book isn't good, or that it wasn't enjoyable, but it ended on a sadder note than I've come to expect from Jones.
I'll be reading the Drowned Ammet soon, and from what I've gathered, it doesn't continue the story that the Cart and the Cwidder began, and that's a bit what it feels like. Like this should be the start of a story, and not an entire story in itself.

These four books are a reread for me, but still incredibly enjoyable. I think the story is well written, and I find myself very caught up in the reading.

this was comforting in a way that a lot of 90s/early 2000s mg books are. i love that it felt very small scale and intimate despite the larger scale issues that came into play, and how human the characters were (a favorite moment was when the older kids fa tried to stay up late to keep watch and then promptly fell asleep the next day and the younger kids just kind of rolled their eyes) and the different skills they brought to the table, and the way it felt so traditional and simple while having all kinds of fun trope subversions and surprises and depths. i did think there was a bit too much info dumping and spelling things out for the reader but i still loved it and diana wynne jones is brilliant.

I read this a handful of years back and it was an absolute delight to reread! Charming and profound and poignant in turns. <3

Upon rereading this book, I have to say that it's even better than I remember it. More people need to be reading Diana Wynne Jones.
