Told through the eyes of another character. Author includes many reflective sentences that would be great to explore in a reading group.

I do like how MPH incorporates old and new characters in these later installments. Matthias was probably my least favorite protagonist, though. I got a lot more bored in the middle, and the climax also feels rushed. Some of the suspense was well done though.

This book is from the perspective of Matthias, whom we haven't seen since Among the Betrayed. Although the author does an excellent job as ever with presenting a well-formed character who has an authentic internal struggle with challenges in a unique way, this book is the first in the series to truly suffer from what I'm going to call the deus ex machina device. There are a couple of major plot events that go beyond reasonable suspension of disbelief. This gives me some concerns for the final book in the series managing to successfully wrap up the story in a realistic way. I'm still rounding this book up to three stars for the presentation of Matthias' internal wrestling.

Spoiler
First, for example, that there is a 100% foolproof device for identifying a fake I.D. If someone is in the right position of power with access to the right supplies, surely that someone could create an impeccable I.D. that would still be fake. Second, that the I.D.s of every person in the entire country just happen to be in the same place to be conveniently blown up at the same time.Rating reviewed 1/23/2023.

Finished this book in one day. Absolutely breezed through it. Intense, action packed compelling dystopian story of a child behind enemy lines. Thrilling story and I am eager to read the final instalment !
