This novel was AMAZING. Mara Dyer is a witty, teenage girl suffering from PTSD-or is she? After a building falls on her friends and her, killing everyone except, miraculously her, Mara struggles to figure out reality from her constant hallucinations. Michelle Hodkin somehow finds a way to interweave constant humor into such a dark tale. Also, Mara has a power that no one understands, even Mara. FULL 5 STARS ALL THE WAY

OVERALL IMPRESSION: This is a hard one to review. The inside cover of the book doesn't tell you a whole lot about what this book is about. It's hard to give a summary of the book without giving away the story. The story was slow moving. I was about halfway through the book when I realized not a lot had gone on to progress the story and I still didn't know what was going on with Mara. That didn't stop me from reading though. For some reason I was compelled to keep turning the pages and I didn't get bored with the book even with the slow moving plot. The last hundred or so pages is when the story picks up and everything starts to go crazy. The ending of the book left me confused. It's hard to explain without giving anything away, so I don't really want to expand on that.

I think this will be a book where reading the second book in the series will make me like the first book better because things will (hopefully) have been cleared up.

CHARACTERS: I liked both of Mara's (the main character) brothers. It seemed like Mara had the perfect family. Her parents were just overprotective enough without being overbearing, and her siblings seemed to be the best brothers any girl could ask for. I also enjoyed the character of Noah, Mara's love interest as well.

COVER: I love this cover. The cover is what initially drew me to the book and made me HAVE to read it. I love the dress that the girl is wearing.

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG THAT CLIFFHANGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was not that interested in reading this book but I randomly picked it up this week. The beginning of the book captivated me and I was very interested to see what would happen. However, after the first fifty pages it just got to annoying. First of all was I not supposed to figure out what Mara's problem was? Or was I supposed to figure it out and just wonder how she would react? I was very confused as to why the author made it so painfully obvious as to what Mara's problem was. Then there was the problem of Noah. At first I was unsure of him but then I realized I did not really like him. What was the main problem was that the author wanted you to think or feel one thing for a character and then abruptly change your opinion. I had a headache at the end of the book because I was overthinking the choices that were made. I did not care for Noah or Mara. The supporting characters were much more interesting to me. I will NOT be reading the rest of the series.

"Eu poderia tomar remédios, fazer terapia, o que quer que fosse. Mas sabia o suficiente para entender que psicóticos não podem ser curados, apenas controlados. E a falta de esperança que veio com tudo isso de repente pareceu demais para suportar.”

I should have read this five years ago 😐
This is the kind of book that you know the younger you would have LOVED and devoured it, but unfortunately I didn’t.
A mix of thriller, romances with supernatural events should have been a hit for me but it wasn’t.
I found the characters really annoying and unbearable.
I only start caring for the story around 75% but the final plot twist made me want to read book two so that’s a win.
However, I found the romance as cliché as possible, I was legit rolling my eyes each time he was « flirting » with her, they wanted to be the next twilight so bad, with the whole you’re not like the other girl quite like come on dude.

the side characters are inexistant ( that dude Jimmie who get expelled suddenly and for what ?😭) and why does Noah wants to be closed to her brothers so much that’s weird. There is two scenes where he really paternalizes her and deal with her brother instead of her like …. Sexism ????? And the whole thing like he’s a whore but didn’t even had sex with the mean girl and he just let her telling everyone they did had sex is so unecessary.

It’s a shame the author underdeveloped the plot and the story for the romance because it led to a little flat-like book to me.

I enjoyed the the inclusion of mental health but even that wasn’t entirely convincing bc there’s no way your daughter just had the most traumatic event in her life and is fine two months after, the parents should have seen she was faking it and she should have seen a therapist WAY BEFORE and probably get hospitalised bc she’s CRAZY.

3/5, overall okay book , nothing exceptional

comfort book <3
