Super readable, in the Need-to-Know-What-Happens sort of way. And I can see why so many people love it. But it's a story with such violence, harsh and bleak at many points, that it just wasn't to my taste. It felt so much like reading non-fiction about kids who live in warzones, refugee camps, awful circumstances. I think I may prefer my fantasy to be somewhat escapist, so I never felt truly comfortable with the story.

I’ve been torn for years over this incredible series: on the one hand, it’s beautifully written and has compelling characters and heart wrenching journeys both physical and emotional, and I want it to be required reading for everyone. On the other hand, I understand that such gritty and challenging fantasy might not be everyone’s cup of tea. So I only tend to recommend it to a select few friends and family I know would love it like I do, when what I would really love to shout my adoration from the rooftops.
