Thomas Madigan is suffering from trauma's of his past in the form of nightmares, but has he runs away, it catches back to him in the form of his missing friends: Kit and Owen. Isla, a selkie who is a dear friend to Kit, brings Thomas back to Mab which hold the key to his pain. As the island's gloomy days fuel the mystery of his two friends, why does Thomas hold such intense repulsion toward his one best friend, Kit?

The atmosphere is AMAZING. I felt the cold salty air of the North Sea on my cheeks from my home in California. I'm a relatively new to 'gloomy atmospheric' novels like this one, but I think I'll have issues finding a book that would be of equal beauty to Gilmartin's ability to write such complex situations. The mystery of Thomas' past on Mab and the questionable loss of Kit and Owen had me thinking so hard of ways they disappeared. The magic never felt too overbearing on the reader nor too abstract to understand, though it was an integral part of the plot. Absolutely well done. I expected it to be rottenly serious, but the platonic-hatred of Thomas and Isla's banter had me smiling. Of course these two losers would love Kit.
I would love to re-read this on  a gloomy day.

4.5/5. This was a great book especially considering it was independently published. The setting is so well described you feel like you are there (and it's creepy!). Interesting and original story.

Definitely up there as one of my favourite books of all time - I love the characters and I love the amount of empathy clearly present for every single person who appears, even when it isn't expressly felt by the characters whose POV we are experiencing. Definitely a book I'm going to come back to again and again!
