I admit. I thought more of this author. I don't know if that's a reflection of the book or just my perspective and attitude. Court intrigue doesn't do it for me.

A romantic murder mystery. I guess I expected more?

I really enjoyed the multiple female friendships! It's rare in YA these days to not have a young female character who's competing for the love interest :'(

My rating is more of a 3.5 stars. I liked Corene and the other princesses; probably the best part of the book was the developing friendships among the women. The political landscape (and keeping track of all of the players) was quite interesting, and I also really enjoyed the chapters with Leah's point of view and learning about her background. I think more time could have been spent on the aftermath of the tower scene; the solutions to all of the narratives threads felt rushed.

DNF. I had really hoped after the last one that this book in the elemental series would be better. Corene is an obnoxious and insufferable character. From reading other reviews, it doesn’t seem like she changes. And the romance seems…absurd? I am giving up on the series completely. I have always liked Shinn’s books until this series (actually, I remember liking the first one, but I read it a long time before picking up the rest of the series). Not giving up on her books, though—just this series.

This was filled with intrigue, conspiracy, female friendship, and plenty other good stuff :)

I was a little worried I wouldn't like it as much because it wasn't in the original country, Welce, but I really loved discovering Malinqua and learnng a little about other countries.
An other country also meant not as much of the original characters but it turned out great in the end. Corene is growing up and finally finding her place and I love reading about "her journey" through this :)

Anyway, one last book to finish this serie I can't wait!!!

I did enjoy this book (stayed up extra late two nights to keep reading) but I felt like it was missing something that the first two books in the trilogy had. I could be imagining this, but the language felt simpler and overall the book had a younger feeling to it. Maybe because the main characters were a little younger, that couldn't be avoided, but I think the seriousness of the plot suffered from that a little. I missed Welce, and I missed Zoe and Darien. It didn't feel like part of the same trilogy, but still a very good book in its own right. I enjoyed watching Corene form friendships, something she hadn't been able to do in the past, and I was glad it turned out she was able to make friends she could trust.

Wow. this has been my favorite installment in this series thus far (Perhaps because I would consider myself a Sweela girl? ;) ). I never expected to like Corene as a character as much as I did, but I think seeing a different side of her really helped. This book had mystery, and political intrigue - and Shinn did a great job with it. I thought I had guessed who the culprit was, but I was so wrong. Excellent book. Am I right in expecting to see more of Leah in the next book? full review to follow.
