So confused because this was said to be a “dark romance retelling of Romeo & Juliet “ There wasn’t a lot of “retelling “ it was just basically the same exact story .
sobbing. just completely sobbing. for like the last 25% of the book. my heart was crushed completely. would recommend to all my friends with the caveat they check the triggers cause this is DARK.

Plot
I’m not one for Shakespeare retelling, but this one had me hooked! This story is tragic, dark, and even depressing at some points. I guess that’s also how the real Romeo and Juliet story would be explained too. The back and forth power struggle between Roman and the other players had me very interested and on the edge. And poor Rose, the shit she’s been through is nuts. I immediately picked up book 2.

Roman finally finds a way to return to town, revenge on everyone including Rose fresh on his kind. When the truth comes out about each of their betrayals, both of them having been duped into thinking that way, they reunite in passion. However, Rose is still being controlled by her father, and when the truth about their daughter comes out, Roman rescues her from captivity and attempts to create a life where they can be a proper family. The big power players are still at play, though, and the book ends with the kidnapping of Rose, and the possible death of Roman.

Downfall by Ellie Sanders is a dark retelling of Romeo & Juliet. I’ve never read a R & J retelling before and wasn’t sure what to expect but one thing for sure is it was action packed. From one page to the next I was constantly kept on the edge of my seat. With all that action comes an emotional rollercoaster of epic proportions.
I did have a hard time connecting with the characters but I think it’s due to reading in sporadic bursts. I didn’t sit down and dive in, I read a couple of pages here and there at first and i really believe it hindered that character growth for me.
With that being said I did really enjoy the book but I personally feel I will enjoy the second instalment a lot more as I will sit down and read instead of breezing through pages here and there.
The storyline is thrilling and exciting, which if you remember reading R & J in school, I’m sure you didn’t feel that same excitement. It’s terrible of me to say but I will forever compare R & J to Claire and Leo’s depiction rather than Shakespeare and that excitement is what I felt while reading this book.
I am definitely looking forward to Part II and hope that there is an actual happy ending and that the author deviates from a true R & J finale!
Thank you to the author and Romance me with Books for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Book 36 of 2024: Downfall - Ellie Sanders
A dark, modern day version of Romeo and Juliet. Rose Capulet’s life was ruined by Roman Montague six years ago, he was exiled from Verona and now he’s returned to exact his revenge.
Review:
⭐️ 4/5
An interesting reimagining of Romeo and Juliet with a much darker side to it. The use of some original Romeo and Juliet characters whilst changing others was somewhat confusing - personally I would have either committed fully to all character names or changed them all. The story gripped me and I did enjoy the story in general, I intend to read the next book soon to see how it all develops as it definitely ends on a cliffhanger. This book is a dark romance and is trigger filled so if that’s not something you’re okay with then I don’t recommend this book as some scenes are particularly difficult.

this would've gotten 5 stars from me if there weren't so many punctuation and grammatical errors... the story itself was great!! I almost loved it
