A perfect political intrigue. I was fascinated and engaged by the world building and Maia was such a loveable main character. I devoured this book in about two days and I can't wait to read it again
This is a beautiful character (rather than plot) driven story. However, you should probably give up on keeping track of the many, many minor characters. There are too many, and they have similar sounding titles. There's an index in the back of the print copy, but it's too general to be helpful.

Although I deeply regret becoming invested in yet another unfinished series, this was marvelous and unexpected. Power and loyalty and, yes, bridges: this is a single person’s story, but it’s also a deeply satisfying political mannerpunkish sort of story. It’s slow and contemplative and also full of small and meaningful happenings.

A re-read, I love the optimism and the hope in the characters. I love the pacing and the vibes, only ding is the language/grammar takes a second to get used to
I didn't want this book to end. What a warm, richly described story. I don't think I'd ordinarily find a slower-paced fantasy novel about courtly etiquette and political intrigue so damn compelling, but I was compelled by every single gorgeous moment. The strength of Maia's inner voice carries this story, the sweet, dedicated, determination of his growth; the cast of characters was beloved, and the world-building drew me in and served me a cup of tea in front of a roaring fire, before, finally, the book I didn't want to end drew to its inevitable, satisfying conclusion. I don't think this book is for everyone, but it surprised me by just how much it was for me.
