Funny. Really funny

Space team by Barry Hutchison is the first book in a series. I decided to try a sample first and had enough giggles in the first few pages to justify getting the whole thing. The writing is witty and funny. It's not super original world building but it's not supposed to be. If you are a sci fi fan looking for a funny read, this is the book for you.

SPACE TEAM!!!!! I read all 7 books in a matter of days. I cannot say how much I love this series. The characters are great, and I truly have never read a book that actually made me laugh out loud (and these books have done it over and over again). Great sci-fi read!

This is very simple fun: bad jokes that get repeated and a not much sense of weight behind the story. It's good to kill time and have a laugh, but there is really nothing, absolutely nothing new or original or anything like that here.
If you wanna have a laugh, go ahead with this.

The author appears to like a comparison to Terry Pratchett. It's not a good comparison as Pratchett's humour comes from the voice of the narrator. A better comparison would be to Harry Harrison's 'Bill the Galactic Hero' series or Simon Haynes 'Hal Spacejock' series where the humour comes more from the characters and their interaction.

The only criticism would be that sometimes the talking is at the expense of the plot moving along. Otherwise, a light and fun read.

It's kind of like A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy meets Futurama meets Guardians of the Galaxy. I love sci-fi but hadn't read much sci-fi comedy before this, and I was pleasantly surprised by Space Team. This is a character driven story and Barry Hutchison does a great job describing his characters with consistent motives and unique dialogue. I loved it.

all I was looking for here was something dumb and entertaining to read as a bedtime story, but it wasn't even funny. I kept cringing at what were supposed to pass for jokes, and if the main character is supposed to be a charming asshole type he should actually have an iota of likability. yeesh. also I'm rolling my eyes at how the few female characters were characterized in terms of their attractiveness to the main character, par for the course I guess.

plot was mostly coherent, pacing was snappy, and some fun alien stuff (I like an evil space soda corporation as the enemy), so there's that.

Space Team is a classic space adventure with a focus on comedy (think Hitchhiker's Guide), that is filled with plenty of incompetence and manages to straddle the line between stupid and funny. As it takes itself lightly, you end up with a highly irrelevant and yet entertaining tale exploring the cosmos with a plot that is surprisingly clever despite the characters being out of their depth.

My usual tastes run more on side of serious, high-stakes military science fiction, so it's a surprise that I enjoyed Space Team so much. The brilliance is in the cast: there is so much personality that by the end of the novel, you could mentally put them in a room and predict what antics each member will cause (on themselves and each other).

That said, the main character is self-aware that he talks too much, and the narration is mainly from his POV so if the first couple of paragraphs turns you off... it won't change. If you're like me and you're chuckling from Cal's suffering, then you'll be pleasantly surprised by a story that's deeper than it looks, and manages to avoid cliches while still being about a band of idiots saving the galaxy.

Recommended. It's not Douglas Adams... but it's close.
