There was a nearly ten-year gap between the original trilogy of this series and the fourth and fifth volumes, and then another five-ish years passed before this one was published. Which doesn’t always lead to the best outcomes— as evidenced by books 4 and 5, which were underwhelming. But I really enjoyed this, a prequel that tells the story of Sabriel’s parents. The ending was a little odd, but it was immediately absorbing, which is what I wanted. Good book.

I feel like this was custom made for fans of the series. Answering questions that always swirled in the back of our minds and tying into Sabriel with the best kind of bow. This is how prequels should be done. Now if we could just get a sequel that tackles characters dealing with the Old Kingdom and a modern, present day Ancelstierre. That would be fun!

Loved being back in the Old Kingdom and loved getting to learn more about these Abhorsens! Great story, great characters.

I love this book. I love all the Easter eggs and the "oh, I know how that plays out." Truly an amazing world.
