Thérèse Raquin

While I understand that this is a classic for its preface concerning Zola's naturalism, the book is...boring. The characters are uninteresting. The story is not shocking nowadays. Really, it's not worth reading.

A remarkably memorable book.

The painter/lover realizing that every single one of his new pieces, from men portraits to women portraits to animals to landscapes, were all influenced by the grotesque vision of the bloated corpse of the man he had murdered, its the kind of fucked up imagery that sticks with me.

Zola really has a talent for morbid writing! A tale of adultery, murder, madness, and revenge, "Thérèse Raquin" didn't disappoint. I put off reading this for a long time, and I don't really know why. It's only a short book, but I could never bring myself past the first couple of pages. Maybe I just wasn't in the right frame of mind to read it, or maybe I just didn't know what it was about. After I finished my re-read of [b:The Ladies' Paradise|28413|The Ladies' Paradise (Les Rougon-Macquart, #11)|Émile Zola|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1389152174s/28413.jpg|1540214] I thought that I might as well give it a go, as I was already submerged in 19th Century Paris, and Zola's magical writing.

This is a very enjoyable novel...well, enjoyable if you like entering the mind of murderers and seeing their sanity spiral downhill. I can understand why there was outrage when it was published, Thérèse isn't censored at all. Perhaps this was too crude of a novel for those who read it in it's original language in 1867, I don't know. What I do know, however, is that this novel is immortal. Reading it, I found that I could perfectly believe that this was happening now, as well as in 19th Century Paris. These are subjects that we never tire of reading about, of murder, madness, adultery, and I think that that is why Thérèse is such a classic.

This is one of my favourite books of all time. I wouldn't have thought I would enjoy it so much but the story and the atmosphere and ambience it describes truly hit me in the soul.

Zola I’m so sorry for all the bashing...

'The Twits' for grown ups.
