the less deranged sibling of la bête humaine. it's far from zola's best but it is still darkly fascinating and a great, dramatic insight into 19th century paris. the numerous pages dedicated to the bodies on display at the morgue really summarise its morbid appeal.

Beautifully written and completely horrifying. All of the hideous guts of human nature splayed out for us to see.

Luckily the lovely Kate Winslet read this to me. What unremitting lugubriousness; what dank despair. Fortunately Therese and Laurent were marching to the same beat and shared all their downs.

A slow, sometimes arduous descent into the terror and madness of mutually assured destruction. Annoyingly moralistic at times, Zola's endless descriptions of nightmarish guilt are a desensitizing, non-stop masochistic torrent.

This is the story of a love triangle between Thérèse Raquin, her cousin and husband Camille and Laurent, one of Camille's friends.

In his preface, Zola explains that his goal in this novel was to "study temperaments and not characters". This book is considered an example of Naturalism.

It is a novel (first published in 1867) and a play (first performed in 1873) which was originally published in serial format in the journal L'Artiste and in book format in December of the same year.

There are some movie's version based on this book: Thou Shalt Not (1928); The Adultress (1953) with Simone Signoret, Raf Vallone, Jacques Duby. It was screened at the 14th Venice International Film Festival where it won the Silver Lion.
