"We are afraid of being responsible for our own lives. Sometimes it takes a while to admit our fears especially to ourselves"

Overall rating: 2.75/5 Stars

*A mostly spoiler free review*

To start with the positive....
There were many good one liners in this book! One of my favourite lines in the book is "Perfection is the enemy of good." I think Lori is very well spoken and has a vast knowledge of the Human Condition. I also enjoyed taking a look at the other side of the therapy office! I was like I got to take a look into what my therapist is thinking about me!

Now on to the no so positives...
I just don't think this book was meant for me. I felt like Lori was trying to convince me that everyone feels shame about going to therapy. While I agree that therapy is deeply personal and is not an easy decision made I just don't view my mental illness and therapy journey the same.

I didn't love the multiple point of views in her book. It feel off that she wrote from the POVs of her clients. How can you really write about someone else situation with out living it? I understand that she was their therapist but there would still be a lack of understanding about their personal experiences.

There were many of her Patients stories that I enjoyed, surprisingly I loved the character John. I thought his aggressiveness and lack of empathy for other was compelling. I also loved Julie! Her story was devastating! I wish there was a little more diversity in her clients. I felt like almost all of them besides Julie felt very similar. More diversity or more depth in there stories would have been amazing!

So good. I needed this book…needed the empathy and compassion and the way it showed me myself. Loved how the narrative flowed.

This book..... I'm almost sad to write this review. I've been reading this book since the start of 2024, which even though I'm finishing this book at the end of April (not super long I guess) I feel like this has been something I've been reading forever (in a good way). I won't say that this book is a substitute for therapy but there are so many lessons you can learn and try to apply in your own life (I know I certainly have, I hope to continue to do so)

There were definitely points in this book when the author felt a little judgemental to me, maybe a little bit reaching, but this isn't a historical "these are the hard facts" kind of book. It's a story, one where I'm sure the timing of things have been pulled out of order and rearranged (the author herself even admits to splicing patients together to make a more cohesive narrative) but to me this artistic flair on reality was worth it. Not only does the reader get to feel and empathize and connect to the change and humanity seen in these patients but also within the author herself.

Bottom line: Maybe You Should Read This Book
