As always I have enjoyed this series immensely, but I was a little let down by this one. That is probably my fault because I hyped it up too much in my head.

i honestly don’t know what to rate this book, but it feels wrong for it to be short of four stars? imagine a sort of beauty and the beast moment. a slay. it’s by far the most historical (and historically accurate!!!!!) of the series so far. i have mixed feelings on hattie and lucian, but i definitely don’t hate them. super excited for the last book :’)

DNF at 20%, I couldn’t handle Hattie, she said she wanted to be independent, but at the first sight of trouble, that she created herself, she wanted her father to save her, and then her whiny attitude was too much for me.

Every. Single. Time.

The first 70% of this book was fantastic but then, as usual, it got bogged down in lengthy, non-romantic plot about stuff I struggled to care about. I want to love this series so badly, the way i loved the first book. It’s objectively well-written, well-researched, and clever, but way too convoluted for me.
