This is a great story that subverts a lot of tropes and defies expectations. It twists and turns with unpredictable but believable mysteries and resolutions.  Just when you think you know something, you’re surprised with where the plot and characters go. It has a lot of painful realism stuffed in with the magical fantasy, and I commend the author for not pulling punches.
Highly recommend & I’m going to read the next book asap.

I didn’t know anything about the plot going in so I was very surprised about the King Arthur/Knights of the Round Table thing, but the sheer amount of questions I had as well as the intriguing characters got me through the beginning exposition and it picked up quickly after that; the presence/tie-in of
root magic
made it even more interesting, as I had no idea how these two separate worlds could connect at first, but once the connection was revealed it felt like a world explosion. The premise of this book by itself sounds unusual and wouldn’t normally catch my attention, but the author make it work so incredibly and I had a blast finishing this book and becoming attached to the characters.

Also I want the Nick-Bree-Sel throuple so badly like all three have such delicious relationship connections to each other and I can SEE THE POSSIBILITIES GOD PLEASE

It’s been a whole minute since book made me feel the way this book did. I felt like i was transported to the best years of my teenage life, where all i would do was immerse myself in the latest fantasy book — letting the writing take me into the next great adventure.

Modern fantasy has taken different shapes since it became popular again in the 2010’s — i feel like many authors tried and failed to make a compelling story. But Tracy Deonn has mastered and renewed this genre, setting a new standard for the future. The hype around this book is absolutely and entirely well founded (in fact, i think there should be way more hype).

This modern Arthur retelling, with a story about grief, love, friendship and magic, grabs you from page 1 and does not let you go until you find yourself in the end. Not once did this book feel out of pace, or did it make me question where the story was going. The world building was never overwhelming, and each and every single one of the characters was written perfectly.

Bree, Bree, Bree. Such a strong, powerful, beautiful, and lovely character. Never once did i feel like her decisions were out of pocket, nor did i ever disagree with her path. I felt as though i was standing beside her every step of the way, rooting for her and encouraging to see her journey through. I laughed when she laughed, cried and felt sadness when she did — i loved her, and i can’t wait wait to read more of her story.

Now, im usually not a fan of love triangles, and the story does seem like it setting up one. However! in this story, it’s definitely the first time i am actually rooting for both of the male-leads. Again, it’s very well written, Nick and Sel bring something unique to Bree’s character, and the author made sure we felt the romantic tension between both of them! Honestly, one of my favorite things about this book is that although we get amazing romance throughout the book — never once does it overshadow Bree’s journey (which is very common in these types of books).

I really wish i could write a letter to Tracy Deonn, thanking her for writing grief in such a beautiful way. When i lost my grandma — who practically raised me in my early years — i felt completely and utterly lost in a world without her. Tracy took me back to that feeling in the first chapter, but throughout the story, she also took the time to let me (and everyone who has experience the ‘loss’ of a loved one) have closure in the journey between Bree and her mom. I really am thankful for that.

Damn! Such a good book! Reviving an old tale and creating a beautiful adventure. I like the characters plot and urban fantasy elements. Excited to read on. Hated the therapist rep. That woman should be fined!

Loved this! Some classic tropes - the "chosen one," some insta-love, and a possible love triangle - being complicated by issues of race, though I feel the gender issue has been trod by many others at this point. I did call how Bree was Legendborn, but there were enough twists to keep my interest. I did have a hard time keeping the Legendborn characters straight outside of Nick and Sel, and the structure of the Order still escapes me a bit. However, I immediately went to the library to get book two.

This story is pure power. Powerfully written. Filled with incredibly powerful women. And then, of course, there's the whole magical powers aspect...

I loved the intertwining of history and legend. The pairing of reality and magic is absolutely spellbinding - it makes this one hard to put down.

Deonn creates an enthralling world and continues to build upon it. The romantic side story is beautiful, the action is thrilling, the twists will have your jaw on the floor.

And that's not even speaking to the incredible representation that appears in every single aspect of this story. Race, sexual orientation, gender... everything is here and everyone is represented!

I'll absolutely pick up the next one and will be recommending this to all the fantasy lovers out there.

Oh my god yes this is so good. I sobbed. I am SO anxious. I cannot wait to get my paws on book 2. I also wish I had this book when I was in high school - a perfect YA book that isn’t juvenile in the writing so adults love it too. It’s stunning wow.
