This book is very well curated and has some marvellous examples of medieval manuscript culture. I would have loved some more examples of everyday manuscripts such as letters and wills and how they were created. But it was a great introduction to the literary culture that was born out of the medieval period.

This book is just wonderful. So informative, a real non-fiction page turner! Mary Wellesley writes with expertise and delivers the information in a passionate and digestible way. I have learnt so much from this book and can’t wait to read more about the top is discussed within.
My favourite chapters were: discoveries; near disasters; and hidden authors.
My least favourite chapter which I had to push myself to get through was: artists.
I 100% recommend this book for people interested in historic buildings, books and the history of England.

Words cannot express how much I loved this book. Perhaps I'll just echo the author and Richard de Bury - "in books I find the dead as if they were alive", and in this I could not agree with him more.

“When you hold a medieval manuscript, what lies in front of you is not only a text, but also a collection of human stories.”
Hidden Hands tells English history through the lives of the people who contributed to various manuscripts, some very well known and some less so. Whether it be artisans, artists, scribes, readers, patrons or collectors, Wellesley considers every contributor who played a part in the journey of each manuscript. She focuses upon the untold stories of those whose lives are preserved within the pages, particularly women whose contributions went unrecognised.
