I really enjoyed the imaginative world-building in this one! The protagonist was likeable and there is fodder for more intrigue in later books. If you like dragons and mystery, then give'r!

Seraphina was an incredibly well done book. Beautifully written, an unpredictable but believable mystery, well drawn world and very well developed characters. It was an absolute pleasure to read and I am impressed, jealous and delighted to find that this is Hartman’s debut book. I am seriously expecting fantastic things from her in the future. Seraphina was all in all a great read. I haven’t read fantasy—of the non-paranormal kind—in ages and this was a great return to it. I have found that sometimes fantasy can feel a little slow to me—lots of description, history, proselytizing, and epic speeches—but this book immediately gained and kept my attention. The characters, especially Seraphina, were my favorite part of the novel and even the secondary characters exhibited depth and development. Seraphina I adored! Smart, witty, prickly…what’s not to love? Here is a heroine who doesn’t need to be rescued, but instead uses her fine ability to lie, her courage (even if she denies that she is courageous), and her independence to solve mysteries and face down her problems. She gains real insight into herself, and I can’t wait to see where she heads in the sequel, which hopefully will come out sooner rather than later. I also want more Kiggs, and the rest of the characters too. I am in love with this book’s characters and am impatiently waiting for the next installment of this series!

I really have enjoyed the story so far. It's been quite different then most books about dragons that I have read. This takes dragon stories into a totally different realm and I have truly enjoyed it. It's not often you find a storyline that you haven't read before. I would definitely say this is one!

I had come across this book when it first came out, but thought a story about dragons didn't sound appealing.

But I'm glad I finally picked it up. It is a complex, satisfying story with a dash of romance. The characters were interesting and different, well defined and entertaining. I started in on the sequel right after finishing the first one.

This was an aloud re-read to my wife, about 12 years after the first time and I was very glad the library had the ebook of the sequel because among the many things I'd forgotten was the cliffhanger ending!
