I definitely finished the book, but that's about all I can say about it. There's an excess of description about navigation, geology, and scientific exploration, surrounding Lovecraft's depiction of setting. Partially due to this, I found it hard to remain engaged in the text. He somehow made running for one's life an experience that wasn't engaging to read about. The oblique ways in which Lovecraft goes about describing the monsters/old ones/mountains does not add a sense of mystery or unknowingness. More than anything, it's just mildly frustrating.

Honestly, this is probably Lovecraft's best story. It proves that he could, in fact, write quality cosmic horror when he didn't fall back on bigotry. I love love love the Antarctic setting and the scientific tone of the piece, and how we basically get a tour or tasting menu of the whole weird world. I would pretty much recommend this to anyone unqualified, which I can't say about basically any other of his work.
Graphic: Body horror, Animal death, Mental illness, and Gore
Moderate: Panic attacks/disorders and Death
Minor: Slavery, Colonisation, and Racism

Moderate: Gore, Animal death, Violence, and Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Mental illness, Slavery, Colonisation, Blood, Forced institutionalization, Death, and War
