could not have worked for me any less. ugh. i would recommend ‘the goldfinch’ instead; it hits similar beats and touches on similar themes while ensuring the characters remain likeable, or at minimum, sympathetic. ozeki’s portrayal of her characters left me cold, annoyed, and disturbed, which would be justified if that was her intention, but i don’t believe it was. sorry!
interestingly, this was the second book i have read lately to reference the philosopher walter benjamin, who died tragically while fleeing collaborationist France into Spain. note to self: read some of his work.
if you want a book about the power of books, read A Christmas Carol and reflect on how generous you feel after reading it. Honestly. Show, don’t tell. And really don’t *tell* us the theme. Don’t *state* the theme, for crying out loud! ugh! this book bothered me.

As someone who developed schizophrenia very early, I related to a lot of what Benny went through. It was tough to get through at times (emotionally), but I am glad I was able to read it in its entirety. It was a great book that kept me interested throughout.

This was a long one, but I did enjoy it. Underneath a story about a boy and his Mom and friends of the boy’s, It’s a book about our attachment to things, personal growth, and the “lives” of books. The narrator for the audiobook did a fantastic job with the cast of characters.
