A series of heartwarming and encouraging sayings and vignettes accompanied by gorgeous, moody yet adorable artwork.
Cute, and good life advice. A nice book to turn to when you need a little pick me up.
This is a sweet book filled with encouragement and lovely artwork. It works to read all the way through, or to just flip open to a page and have those words fill you up. It would be a great gift if you are looking to encourage or remind someone the importance of friendship and kindness.
A quick read. I think this will become my comfort book.

Since I got this book from a dear friend for my birthday in early July, I have been flipping to through the pages and opening it up at random like she (and writer Charlie Mackesy) told me to do. Today I took the time to read it slowly from front to back just to make sure I have seen all of its pages at least once, knowing I will probably pick it up again in the future to just open it up at random again. Important to me today was to at least be able to see what exactly Mackesy was doing here. And I must say this book did more to me than I had expected it to do.
I understand where a lot of people's cynicism towards this book comes from - yes, it is made up from a list of optimistic generalities that could've been plucked from Instagram and on their own they wouldn't carry much worth. Yet cynicism is a choice, perhaps even a state of mind of sorts. I read another book this year that was in the same vein as The boy, the mole, the fox, and the horse, filled with reflexive thoughts that anyone could come up with, yet its quirky style and meta-narrative didn't do much to elevate the ideas behind it. With Mackesy's book it's a bit different. Its format of a "picture book for all ages" helps put its quotes in a dreamy, open context. At the same time the quality of Mackesy's drawings are of such a degree that they are able to convey feeling and meaning of their own which, combined with the text, offer a much deeper and rewarding reading experience.
Of course, the book only really works if you are willing to open up to it; to be vulnerable to its simple, childlike matter and to let emotions guide you rather than literary complexity. In that regard it succeeds with flying colors as it is indeed something that can be there when one needs it; when one is down on their luck and looking for a beautiful, digestible look at living life.
