By Any Other Name was a wonderfully feminist retelling of Shakespeare legacy from the “true” author of his works, a fierce, strong woman. I loved her story and getting to learn her whole story, no matter how tragic, and it was tragic. The relationships she makes with the women and men in her life are so formative and impactful. Her last chapter did make me cry!
The modern day plot point was beautiful as well, but for me was a little too on the point of mirroring the past that it dragged the story down a little bit. I think I would have enjoyed the story just as much, if not more, if the modern day story wasn’t there.

By Any Other Name is a historical fiction book which follows the timelines of two strong women - Melina Green in the present and her ancestor, Emilia Bassano in the past. Both women are writers and both are facing adversities in publishing their work. This is a story about women who want to see their work in the public eye no matter what the cost. It was very surprising to think that ALL this time later, women are STILL fighting against a prejudice in the area of writing. I love all of Jodi Picoul's books because the characters always draw me in and the story usually has a twist that keeps me guessing and makes me rethink my view of the world. This book did not disappoint. Some people may not like the claims that were made in the story about the work of Shakespeare, but I thought it was a very interesting twist. This book held my attention to the very end as I was eager to see how each character's story played out. I thought they were great stories of life, love, and friendship. Thank you so much to the publisher and to NetGalley for giving me an advanced copy to read.

Like all of the limited books I rate 1 star, I started out just a little irked, then full blown annoyed, then actively angry at this book. The argument that Shakespeare didn’t write Shakespeare is something I honestly am not irked by. I’ve always said if tomorrow the ghost of Shakespeare himself came down and told us he didn’t write his plays- I would not be upset. Who wrote them doesn’t take away from what they are and the legacy they have had.
Now THIS BOOK. I could say many things, but I’ll stick to one: she gives much too much of the re-attribution of Shakespeare to her one character. That is the crux of my beef, which leads down many branching roads of irritation that I won’t outline here. Because I’m ready to move on and not waste any more mental load on this book. Because it makes me borderline angry.
