I find Crash to be a perfect book for a middle school aged boy (particularly a football fan) and good for a quick read and a few laughs for any adult reading. The book made me laugh at loud in several spots from the sheer dumb middle school humor that caught me off guard directly after reading Paradise Lost which is not known for its humor.
There will be some who don't like the main character Crash, but I think most will be able to sympathize or even enjoy him despite his flaws. I remember being of the same mindset as him, believing in the stereotypes I saw on movies and TV and trying to live them out. I enjoyed the whole novel though I found the ending to be a bit abrupt.

So funny! I got in trouble for laughing in class.
Read because it was on the 2002 Caudill list and I was a diligent bookseller. Also because Spinelli's fiction is excellent in general.
I use this book with my class as our first read aloud of the year. It is awesome. It takes on the bullying in a funny way.

For us older kids this book is a fast read and you'll still get something out of it as will every age group really. I recommend it highly, the story does a good job of teaching the reader to keep their ego down, to not judge others, among many other things.
The writing style is very simple, Spinelli gets everything across crystal clear. You can really tell what the main character is feeling. It really has a depth that surprised me, very emotional at parts.For me this was simple entertainment, pure and sweet.
