Maybe a 3.5? Hate a cliffhanger(ish) ending, torn on reading the next book

I picked up this book because it was labeled LGBTQ+. I liked that the main character is queer, and is not hypersexual. It makes sense with her trauma that she’s not ready to dive into full sex and I found it really refreshing. I also love how the author uses “male” and “female” and addresses the icky way it has been used in other series. I am finding out I am not the biggest fan of the “best assassin” trope, but I think this is the best one I’ve read so far. Keera is competent at her job, only hindered by alcohol or the people around her. I’m interested in the mystery of the series and I am looking forward to the next book.

I LOVED this book! I was completely engrossed and couldn’t put it down. And then, when I realized the author is Indigenous, my mind was blown because I could see all the connections/metaphors. Less sapphic than I was hoping for, but still such a good story, I can’t wait to read the 2nd one.

shallow/underinformed consideration of enslavement, genocide, alcoholism, starvation without robust characterization or worldbuilding to distract me
