Overall, I enjoyed this book about as much as the first volume, but just couldn't get past the time-hopping. Some of "pre-Crossing" content that annoyed me in the first book was better explained in this entry, but I just didn't love it, and I can't quite put my finger on why. Didn't feel completely true to the universe of the first book, maybe.

I also wasn't crazy about the way that rape was dismissed by Tear in the epilogue--oh, you'll get over it, and be happy, you're just not there yet.

3.5 stars, rounded down this time.

I liked it, but WILL NOT recommend because: (minor spoiler alert) (and possible trigger alert)

... She's cutting herself to deal with anger/feelings/control issues? And then they never really deal with it. She's just using her magic to cut herself up. Ugh.
I get that she's a young woman under enormous pressure to literally save everyone, but this leaves me with a residual 'ick'.

As many people have stated, this book is not the same as the first in the series. However, that is not inherently good or bad. They are both amazing books with great qualities. I enjoyed this book immensely. It has many aspects that keep you reading, such as suspense, coming of age, conflict, and romance. The incorporation of other character's perspectives helps add more excitement and intrigue to the story. My only complaint may be the length of the chapters as I am someone who likes to finish reading for the night perfectly at the end of a chapter.

Didnt read as fast as book one, but still enjoyed. The library is closed and I am mad I can’t go get book 3!

I am in awe. Obviously the time issue I had with the first book came together in this book. This book kept me on the edge of my seat. It is dark. It is woven together beautifully. What a story.

Johansen has written a strong follow to Queen of the Tearling, taking the reader on something of a thrill ride through the events leading up to and through the invasion prompted by the actions of Queen Kelsey in the first novel. Johansen does a good job of crafting a different narrative from the original. We meet new characters, and everyone is facing a new set of challenges. Kelsey goes on her own journey within, developing a harrowing storyline as she channels visions of an ancestor that will directly affect her actions in her timeline. We learn much more about the "crossing" that brought settlers from near-future earth to this medieval/fantasy world of Tearling. I am looking forward to seeing where the story goes from here in the third novel (and in the prequel novel as well).

3.5 - took a while to adapt to the new thread in the storyline

I loved it so much, I can't wait to read the final book... Seriously, I need to know the end ASAP!
