A powerful collection of lyrical and political First Nations poetry, with clear calls for action and justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from the 1970s that are as relevant (and depressingly similar) to today’s.
“We want hope, not racialism,
Brotherhood, not ostracism,
Black advance, not white ascendance:
Make us equals, not dependants.”

I really enjoyed reading these poems- I liked the fact that they’re reflective of what’s happen in Australian history and I think there’s a lot in there that Australian Christians need to reflect on (in terms of the part we’ve played in colonisation using faith as a basis for that).

I will not recover from the realisation I am Australian, but Indigenous people are not just Australians.

My favourite book ive ever been asked to read for school, defs recommend taking it one poem at a time and really sitting with each thoroughly!! Such a thought provoking read and excellent if u are reflective and seek to make change.
Oodgeroo's poetry is breathtaking as she recounts the many struggles faced by indigenous people in australia from colonisation to present day. I saw it as both a love letter to her people and a call to action to all those complicit in the active discrimination indigenous australians face. I believe it to be a necessary read in light of the increasing commitment and move to reconciliation, and the current voice referendum.
