The characters were incredible. I love an ensemble cast, and this was done so well. I could feel these women. I was yelling and crying and cheering and booing at them.
A truly magical (ha!) story about sisterhood, betrayal, and beliefs with surprisingly great rants on white feminism, racism, intersectional identities, queerness, etc. Basically, this whole book has a great message of what it means to be a woman, but how women (especially those with privilege) have a very rigid idea on this; and how the system upholds this rigid idea since it benefits them under the guide of tradition. It includes, of course, a lot of representation for WOC, LGBTQ+ people, and disabled people.
I cannot wait to read the second one. I might actually go buy it asap because holy shit this was good.

All that being said, I did really enjoy Theo’s character and how Niamh stepped up to care for her (and raised hell on her behalf). They were my favorite part of the book and I thought their bond was very sweet. I also loved seeing Theo’s journey of self-discovery and the trans joy that she experiences. I enjoyed the other characters (except Helena🤢) but I didn’t really resonate with them. They did have distinct personalities, but I feel like their problems were just a little too millenial for me to care about and I think the writing was generic enough that I wasn’t further moved to be invested in them. I do hope Leonie’s character is centered more in the next book, I think her story has a lot to say and I wanted to see more of her Diaspora coven (which is for non-white witches).
My rating is lower, because the writing was kind of cliche at times. Don’t get me wrong, it was fun and witty, but nothing really groundbreaking. I think if you like watching blockbuster movies you’d have fun with this. I will probably read the next book because I was not expecting the cliffhanger at the very end. Again, it’s a fun witchy book with social commentary, and if you haven’t thought much about transphobia and feminism you might find it to be reflective.
(There is a lot of graphic transphobic rhetoric in the perspective of one of the characters, Helena, so be aware of that if it might be upsetting to you.)

I loved so much about this, the world-building is great (I love reading different approaches to witches in books) and the entire book is also a fuck you to terfs which is always excellent.
I found the first 150 pages quite slow, the book started a couple of chapters too early imo and it took a while for the plot to kick off. Possibly too many POVs as I spent a long while just trying to remind myself who was who.
The characters did feel slightly one-dimensional at times, particularly Elle, but I still loved many of them. I would love to learn more about Diaspora too.
The final 150 pages were excellent, I sped through them so fast. I really enjoyed the plot development and can't wait to read the next one. Glad I already have it!!
