This had some turns and it is quite descriptive. I would take caution at the accuracy of the TERF and transphobic characters. It is necessary to the plot but it is ugly. On a more positive note, this is such a beautiful story and world. The realness of some themes and connection to reality is sad but that also means the love, hope and fighting to be who you are is true/ worth it.

I’m always a fan of “there is a secret magical underbelly to the world we live in” kind of stories. So witches + modern day UK just felt like a good time. I was right!

Dawson writes a wonderful story of how sisterhood, ignorance, and fear can truly muddy the waters of a coven. A coming of age of mixed with the trials and tribulations of an older group of friends. It’s always so refreshing to read stories of older friend groups/people not in their twenties hahaha.

Women fighting may play into the patriarchy, but TERFs can burn. 🔥

You know I feel like I’ve only seen the UK version of this cover and if you haven’t seen it it’s bright pink. Seeing that color gave me the wrong impression of this book. I thought it was going to be a cozy witchy tale and it is to a certain extent..but it’s also deliciously dark.

We follow four POVs of witches:
Niamh - one of the most powerful witches in the story who is a healer and sentient. She is no longer apart of HMRC (Her Majesty’s Royal Coven)
Elle - a healer who is also not a part of HMRC actively. She has a witch daughter named Holly and a non-magical or mundane husband and son named Jez and Milo
Leonie - she left HMRC to create her own more inclusive coven called Dispora that mostly includes minorities. She has a witchy gf named Chinara
Helena - current High Priestess of HMRC who has a daughter named Snow who is an elemental witch

There is a premonition that the Leviathan will rise and extinguish the witches and warlocks of the UK. When a really powerful child is found after a magical incident at their school in Scotland happens, Helena has the child named Theo locked up thinking this child is how the Leviathan will rise. What happens next you won’t see coming.

The ending shocked me and I’m really not sure if I care to continue the series because of the direction the book is going in. TBD

I enjoyed the themes, like the politics and dynamics at play among the covens and witchy parts of society, but the plot really didn't wow me. It was a little boring.

The book has LGBTQ and BIPOC rep but I would have liked for Theo to play a bigger, more active part in the story.

I listened to the audiobook and Aiofe McMahon is a favorite narrator so that helped get me through the book when the story dragged.
