It was Sweet!!!!! Chock full of sticky sweetness. The love story was good, very fall in love at first sight and if everything would go right things would be happily ever after. It was soild.

My favorite part of the book was actually the realtionship between Sam and Riddle. The little quirks between the two and how they looked out for each other. I did especially love Riddle. Lovely book.

2014 review:
This is a book about a boy and a girl who meet through the song I'll be there by the Jackson 5 (one of my favorite songs, what a coincidence). Emily Bell is a perfect girl, goes to church, is in the church choir, gets good marks in school, has a loving family. Just an ordinary life. All of this changes when Sam Smith walks into her church on a Sunday morning and looks straight at her when she sings I'll be there in her church. Not perfectly but purely.

Sam is a boy who was taken away from his mom by his schizophrenic dad, along with his little brother Riddle. Ever since his dad has been taken them everywhere and nowhere. They leave as soon as the people in the town start to know them. Never staying in one place for long in fear of getting caught. The boys practically have to raise themselves because their dad is not taking care of them, not even feeding them. They are scared of him. When Sam meets Emily everything changes for him too.

She starts to see there is more to life then what is in her small town. He starts to see that normal people aren't all that bad and that maybe he should get him and Riddle away from that awful man. It's a love story that breaks you into pieces because of all the pain the boys have to go through.

I had a hard time getting through the book because the way it was written. Some parts were skipped over too quickly. The characters were rushed. But other parts took forever. It couldn't really get my attention. Nevertheless the story was pretty good. There is a lot of potential there. The ending was a bit predictable.

Just finished reading this book in one sitting. It was sentimental and unexpectedly funny in some parts. Not a realistic story at all, but a feel good story with very clear good guys and bad guys.

Absolutely Amazing!! Excellent book with deeply felt resonant characters. This book grabbed me from the start and I couldn't put it down. A very touching ending! The way Sloan captured the characters was very unique and very well done. It does have some similarities to her later book "Counting by 7s: which I also loved. I liked seeing inside of each of the the characters, from the horrifically criminal to the silly and slightly ridiculous to the painful and hopeful and loving. I can't recommend this one enough! I'm going to read the sequel right now!

I'm trying to think about this book without giving anything away. This book was not what I expected, but I'm so glad I read it.

Sam and his brother Riddle live a rough life. They are on the run with their dad, a petty thief. Dad does no parenting. He doesn't make sure the boys have medical care, or schooling, or even feed them. They are on their own for dumpster dives or gas station hot dogs.

Emily lives a very suburban life. The worse thing that has ever happened to her was being forced to sing at church -- and she isn't a good singer.

Sam and Emily's paths cross and the people around them also experience life changing events.

I enjoyed so much about this book. My son always rates book on an "addictiveness" scale. This book is definitely addictive. I was about halfway through, and thought I'd read a chapter or two -- I finished the book in one sitting.

I loved the changing points of view in the book and thought it added so much to the story. It helped connect to each character, even poor Bobby.
