I'll tell you one thing. Hatchet ain't got nothin' on Riddle and Sam. They are the ultimate survivors. This book was kind of Hatchet, if Hatchet's dad was kind of a crazy mofo.
First, the good. Sloan's voice is strong and original. Her writing style is distinctive, which is not something I encounter all that often. I loved that the song "I'll Be There" by the Jackson 5 unites the story. It made me want to listen to it right after I finished th ebook (making my roommate raise her eyebrows in question). I liked that there was a strong philosophy of karma throughout the story.
But, Holly! Girl! I wanted more dialogue. I liked that I was all in everyone's heads but it was a little weird. I do wonder if adults will like it more than teens as a result of the lack of dialogue. Without dialogue, I felt like it made it harder for me to really imagine Emily and Sam's relationship.

It was really cute, but I wish we were involved more in the whole scheme of things. I mean, we, the readers, sure, were involved in the whole scheme of things, but only partially since we weren't given the details of some fine points of the story. For instance, the part where Sam and Emily's relationship was building up. It would have been really nice and exciting to read their actual conversations. I understand that the romance bit wasn't the center of the story, but it plays a huge role and I'm just saying that I would have loved it more if the telling of the novel was more conversation and less narration. I also understand that the narration bit is essential to the telling of the whole story, but yeah, you get the point.
This novel reminded me a lot of [b:Eleanor Park|15745753|Eleanor & Park|Rainbow Rowell|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1341952742s/15745753.jpg|17225055] which was nice. I love Semily, but I think I would have loved it more if the circumstances were different meaning we weren't excluded from their actual conversations which are the best part of the budding of a pairing's relationship. I'm sorry I keep bringing this up, but seriously.
