Good writing, okay plot. It felt like a bunch of fantasies I've read previously, but I'm interested in where this may go.

I liked it, but I didn't love it. I loved Cas and Galo and all the banter in this book and how bloody and stabby it was... and I even kinda liked Em and Ares... but overall I was just... kind of... bored. Sorry?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The first half of this book felt more or less like a lot of other YA Fantasy books out there. It did, however, begin to pick up about half way through and start to get more interesting. The world building was lacking and a bit too vague for the most part so hopefully that picks up in the next two books.

Can we just talk about Olivia at the end though? Actual chills.

Writing was awesome character were awesome plot was interesting it was all morally grey but I was bored somehow and I just wanted them to get on with it and WE’RE IN THE MIDDLE OF A WAR but yet I still loved the couple ? [b:Ruined|26074185|Ruined (Ruined, #1)|Amy Tintera|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1445240167s/26074185.jpg|42794689] is a fast-paced, brutal fantasy story. The story is told from a third-person perspective of two characters - Emelina (Em) Flores and Prince Casimir (Cas) Gallegos. Em is from a land called Ruina, where the people possess magical abilities, but Em, the daughter of the powerful woman who ruled Ruina, is "useless" because she doesn't have any powers. Her mother and father are dead and her younger sister has been kidnapped by Cas' family, or because of his family, before the beginning of the story takes place and she leads the plan to infiltrate the royal family in part to get revenge on the slaughtering of her people, known as "Ruined". She takes the place of Cas' betrothed and marries the prince in order to find out where his family is keeping her sister.

The story moves along as a breakneck pace. I would have to say that Ruined was almost moving too quickly for my liking. Instead of taking the time to rest on any scene, it was just one thing leading to another, and then everything just goes terribly wrong for everyone. I had a hard time connecting with the characters because of this, and it wasn't until almost halfway through the book that I finally got into the rhythm of the story and really started to fall in love with the characters. Characters get killed off left and right, so maybe don't get too attached. But I do love how dark the book got (even from the very first chapter).

I would like to take the time to appreciate that this world [a:Amy Tintera|5768611|Amy Tintera|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1351221498p2/5768611.jpg] has created is different from other period high fantasy books. The women and men are on equal footing. It's expected that the girl can fight just as well as any boy and Em can definitely fight spectacularly with a sword in a dress.

The story is a fast-paced whirlwind of action and romance and just when things were getting exciting, the book is over and the wait for book two begins! Hopefully, we'll see more backstory on Em, Cas, and all side characters, because I would love to learn more about Aren, Iria, Galo, and Olivia. I can't wait to read what crazy shenanigans Em and Cas will go through next.
