I enjoyed the book, but there’s some issues that lowered my overall enjoyment. Callie seemed to have a lot of internalized misogyny that affects how they view Magic and themselves. This I understand is due to their abusive relationship with their mother. They’re so focused on proving they’re not a girl that anything deemed girly they keep at arms length.

Even though it’s heavily highlighted and the main theme of the book, they don’t realize that the transphobia is heavily rooted in misogyny and anti-magic sentiment. They know that it’s wrong but doesn’t connect the two.  Highlighting that intersectionality somehow would’ve been nice. Eventually they learn to find magic useful and not something to resist, but that’s different than actually respecting it and the people who typically wield it.

Callie’s flaws weren’t really fleshed out or highlighted like the other characters. Everything was black and white, right or wrong. And everything wrong had nothing to do with them. They always knew what was the right thing to do. The other characters had more depth and thought to them than Callie. They had flaws and struggled not just externally but internally as well.

I really enjoyed the book but I think another character should have been the strong pillar of justice and righteousness instead of Callie. There could be some more depth to Callie in the next book but I’m not sure after reading the synopsis.

The story moved too quickly through the character building.  I had to use my experience with other stories to fill in the gaps.  It often felt like an abridged book, where they removed the parts that draw you in, help make the characters come alive, make the relationships believable.  Despite that, the story did make me cry, and laugh.  I enjoyed it, and do plan to read book 2.

A magnificent queer, found family allegory, featuring loveable characters and a fight against tyranny. This is a surprisingly heavy fantasy but absolutely realistic and addicting; I checked the sequel out of the library right away. If you're a fan of Nimona, you're going to enjoy this book. Bonus points to the author for Callie's absolutely raw, quotable lines about the world.

Sir Callie is the sort of book that you wish middle-schoolers got the chance to read when you were growing up. Callie, a non-binary child who wants to grow up to be a knight like their father, travels to Helston, the centre of their nation. There, they discover that their two dads and their accepting commune are very different from the rest of the world, where everyone is expected to fit into two gendered boxes (boys become knights, girls become magicians) and a bigoted chancellor rules instead of the Crown Prince. A harrowing read as you worry for Callie and the small group of friends they collect as they challenge the encroaching evil of the witch Alis and the bigotry in the city walls. Excited to read book two!

A bit a bit of a preachy introduction to human rights. But it's a cute adventure story that includes all kinds of difficult topics in an inspiring way for kids
