this book literally has my heart beating out of tune. i don’t know how to exist with this in my head. the characters. fuck. the whole novella. dude. how did she write this. becky, how do you do this? only 130 pages and yet i am completely attached to characters and dumbfounded by the whole thing. the third planet? chikondi at the end of the second? JACK? wow. i. it was so much. i was so excited by the end of that discovery that i had to remind myself that it wasn’t real. i was absolutely and completely hooked. becky always fucking outdoes herself and to this day i think about her. i can’t. reading her books sends me into a spiral every goddamn time.

Read #1 (summer 2021): Nightly read aloud story time with friends over Discord. A friend read this to us and I occasionally fell asleep, so I missed some small parts, but I LOVED IT. Absolutely exactly my cup of tea, will definitely read more by Becky Chambers.

Read #2 (March 2023): Loved it even more when consciously reading by myself, if that was even possible. This book is everything. It legit changed how I look at humanity, science and space exploration. I will be recommending this to absolutely anybody with even a passing interest in scifi.

If you liked the game No Mans Sky this is for you! I love Becky Chambers style of writing, she has a way of writing people that feels so endearing and lifelike even in a book as short as this. You can feel the appreciation she has for science in her writing and it’s the reason I always come back to her books.
