I LOVED this authors first book and was anxiously awaiting this one. It’s been a long time coming so I was ecstatic when I finally had it in my hot little hands. The first few chapters were very funny and much like her first book. And then it took a turn. The author has been through some stuff since her first book was published. Her sister committed suicide. She went through a divorce. She had medical issues that were difficult to diagnose, which ended up in a cancer scare and surgery. So this book is not the same, and that’s ok. I’m just not sure I was prepared for it. It felt a little dark and sad, with no real resolution to any of those feelings. I think that’s my biggest issue with this one. I don’t have a problem with people going through hard things and sharing them. That’s incredibly brave and takes a 1000+ level of vulnerability that not many people are willing to share. But it’s a difficult space to be left in, as a reader. The fact that I need some resolution or a happy-ish ending says more about me than it does about the author but that’s where I’m at on this one. It’s a good read, but be prepared.

A whimsical exploration of some really dark topics. I applaud it for its uniqueness.

I have only read Allie’s previous book Hyperbole and a Half, I’m not familiar with her blog or anything like that so I don’t know too much about Allie. I found Hyperbole extremely funny and relatable so I was expecting at least some of the same with this one. However, i just didn’t enjoy it.
Overall, the book was more depressing than funny. I did laugh at a few points but as I got more into the book, it became more convoluted and sad. Some of the stories would start out okay but then it would go into a completely new story that just made me confused. A lot of the stories didn’t feel complete.
It took me longer than it should to finish and overall I was pretty disappointed.

A bit more real, and a bit less fun than her previous book, I still found myself laughing out loud, and feeling things (?!) as I read this.
