This was such a good duology. It's very different from what I usually read, but something about Marissa Meyer's writing just pulls me in. I loved Gild and Serilda as characters and I was very happy with the way the book wrapped up in the end.

I feel like this shouldn't be categorized as a young adult novel and is pretty much new adult genre.

This book was better than gilded. Although I enjoyed guilded I thought sometimes it left holes and was dragged through plot points that maybe didn't pay off.
I found this book to have a much better pay off and was more fast paced while still remaining readable.
My main issue is the height of the drama happens very late into the book and I feel as though it spends a lot of time explaining unimportant aspects and then doesn't let the dust settle later in the story.
the Rumpelstiltskin twist was a little bit too on the nose to be dumped in right at the end

Let me start with a statement, for me Marissa Meyer is a hit or miss author. I can safely say some of her books like Cinder were hits, some were okay like Renegades and Gilded but some were misses like Archenemies. At least this book was a hit and a much needed improvement over Cursed and an outstanding way to finish the duology. It starts (more like continues) with the main character Serilda (whose last name I forgot) picking up after the events of the first instalment and immediately I noticed something, the book is slow paced like the preceding books I've read (that doesn't mean it ruins the book) but it lets me explore the character dynamic between Serilda and Gild. The relationship between them grows deeper which dominated the book, left room for not many other events to happen and made this book more like a romantasy than a fantasy. I've read romantasies before like Graceling and Powerless (of which I enjoyed the latter) and I'm still debating whether that's my cup of tea. The book was slow for the first 400 pages or so right up until the last 80 pages which were action-packed, an afterword from the narrator, and that ends the book.

This book is well written. I liked the overall story. I was frustrating at times because the main character has all of the information in front of her but can't comprehend it. I loved the guilded prince, the princess, the forest folk, and the ghosts. The dark castle was spooky and creepy with the different creatures.  Serilda is now cursed with the guilded prince. They are trying to find a way to break the curse and set everyone free.

I actually dnfed this book around 300 pages. It dragged on and it felt like I was just reading a series of psychological torture throughout. It just wasn’t enjoyable.
