if you've gotten this far i imagine you're familiar with baru's game. she's at her most lovable in this book, i think, and it really does feel like monster + tyrant were originally one book split in two the way this one wraps up the former's loose threads (for the most part). i found it the easiest to read out of the three but it's probably because i'm starting to be properly familiar with the lore. idk when book 4 will come but i will be seated

Book 3 very much doubles down on the style of the first two books. If you liked them, you'll enjoy a satisfying continuation of the story here. The pace is faster than the first book, and characters are driven to be more improvisational than the dense methodical scheming in Book 1. Still enjoyable, but I missed the more intricate and layered plotting of Book 1.

Another coups by Seth Dickinson. I love these books so much, my only criticism being that I’d like more visual descriptions. Dickinson crams in so many ideas that the pace always feels very fast and I’d like the room to imagine settings and people more clearly. Aside from that the Tyrant Baru Cormorant once again delivers such creativity and beauty and intrigue. The world building is superb, and I can’t praise the diversity of characters enough. Dickinson especially has grown in character development, characters are now much more memorable and relatable.
I was saddened to read that Dickinson may be delaying the fourth and final book of this series, though this third book felt like it ended with only minor cliffhangers, a gift for those of us who will be waiting with bated breath for the next installment.

I have other stuff to read and this isn’t even the last one???

Oh Baru they can never make me hate you. Maybe the woke East Indian Trade Company will solve everything.
Back to peak Baru. Most of the flaws I had with Monster (confusing introductions of characters and concepts done too quickly at the front end of the book, not enough moments of Baru being able to show off how smart she is) were made up with change in this one. I almost feel like Dickinson over-corrected with the amount of times Baru or another character take the time to re-explain the events that have happened so far or their upcoming plans, but it was done differently each time and never felt redundant (and, I appreciated the recollections).
Love this cast of characters so much. I am excited when anyone, no matter how unlikable, is back on the page. Everyone is written so so so well, and all of their individual motivations, values, and threats against them are kept in mind in every action they take and word they say (something that was also the case for the last two books).
This is one of the most intelligent, well put together series that I have ever read. This book especially took so many details, details that could just have been world building or character moments, and wove them into the main plot so spectacularly that I was somehow both blindsided multiple times and knew it was coming. For instance, the world building about how gender is viewed in the Mansion, treated at the start of the first book as both a worldbuilding and character aspect of Svir, and nothing more, Spectacular.
A breathtaking book in a breathtaking series. I was so sad to finish because I know that there just aren't other books like this to this degree. A personal tangent, but the plot of the series could be horrible with leaps of logic and characters I can't stand, and I would still read it just for the sheer intelligence and care put into the worldbuilding of the empire and outside of it. Genuinely a masterful work and Dickinson needs so much more recognition for what he has done here.

This took me forever to get through....It was so worth it though.
Oh Baru they could never make me hate you....
There is so much happening in this novel and if you have ever read Harrow the Ninth it has some similarities with Baru's mental state. I loved what HtN did so to have another book I read also do something similar? Chef's kiss.
I really enjoyed what Dickinson did with his characters here, I felt like everyone just grew exponentially. I especially liked how Tau went from MY TRIM!!! to oh there's the trim. Very good.
The themes Dickinson brings to this that I feel that reflects real world issues is also so important. Colonialism, to using bio-terrorism. amazing. I can't wait to read the final book the last chapter was certainly a teaser.
