“He said something like things can’t be that bad if the sun is out and shining. Like I said, that stuck with me. Maybe because it’s the truth. As long as the sun is shining, sh*t can’t be that bad.”

I fell in love with Cam from jump. HE HAD A PET TORTOISE NAMED RAPHAEL Y’ALL!!! 🥹 I’m legit trying to do the math & figure out if I can safely get a pet tortoise or will my 3yo terrorize it. 😅

But fr, I am shook that I never see this book on booksta! Fun story: My sister and I were in target one day last year & I kept going back to this book mainly because of the cover. I didn’t end up buying it so she got it for me for Christmas!

I loved it so much. It could easily be binged in a day but once I met Cam, I had to slow down. He was too adorable and I wasn’t ready for story to be over. And Avery 😭. My heart broke for her. She was really let down by everyone around her. But I was so proud of her growth!

Read if you enjoy:
💙 slow burn
💙 college setting
💙 friends to lovers
💙 found family

The topic of how we discuss the trauma of past SA has definitely evolved since this book. While the love story was sweet and lovely, I couldn’t enjoy it because of how poorly the SA was handled in this book, and how it was constantly clobbered over our head. Not that it isn’t an important thing to talk about but I was constantly on edge because it was brought up so often. The SA topic was handled in a jarring and blunt manner. From the description of the act, too many details brought up again and again of how cruelly victims are treated, etc. I found it really triggering and I don’t suggest this book for other SA survivors

I refuse to say the fact it was SA is a spoiler. It’s in front of our faces from almost the very beginning that the FMC was SAed in some way and that everyone in her life acted cruelly.

I loved this book, so I must warn you to not make the same mistake that I did: DON'T READ THE SECOND BOOK. Leave the MC as they are.
I read the next book, and then I went to this book and opened my eyes to all the flaws and emotional abuse that the MC went through with the main love interest. As we only got her POV in this book, the love interest, Cam, is so charming, and a truly nice guy. But that's what happens when the character is using her rose-color glass and missed all the red flags.
Check CW, and have in mind that might differ from one person to the other. I would recommend reading other books from this author since this isn't her best work. But it's not a bad book.
After reading the second book I can tell for sure that he was a "nice guy" for sure. And I don't want that BS about the publication year, this was gaslighting and emotional abuse in a book.
I'll leave it with 4-stars due to the fact that's what I gave it when I first read it. As a standalone, it was good, it was sneaky about the abuse and gaslighting (which it's terrifying that I didn't notice this when I first read it. It was so subliminal that I don't think the author did it on purpose). This is me trying to be fair, and authentic about my first review of the book.
The gaslighting and abuse are so subtle that you might not even notice, so if that doesn't bother you and you can look past that... you might enjoy it.
But I'm not recommending this book to you.
