The topic of how we discuss the trauma of past SA has definitely evolved since this book. While the love story was sweet and lovely, I couldn’t enjoy it because of how poorly the SA was handled in this book, and how it was constantly clobbered over our head. Not that it isn’t an important thing to talk about but I was constantly on edge because it was brought up so often. The SA topic was handled in a jarring and blunt manner. From the description of the act, too many details brought up again and again of how cruelly victims are treated, etc. I found it really triggering and I don’t suggest this book for other SA survivors

I refuse to say the fact it was SA is a spoiler. It’s in front of our faces from almost the very beginning that the FMC was SAed in some way and that everyone in her life acted cruelly.

reread 3/25/18: Still a tearjerker! ohh Cam!! 😍😍😍

---
I don’t really know what made me pick up wait for you by Jennifer L. Armentrout (writing as J. Lynn). To be honest, I received four of the books in this series a couple of years ago but since this wasn’t a genre that interested me, I didn’t bother reading it.

Let’s just say that I am kicking myself because I didn’t read these books. I don’t even KNOW WHY I picked it up and whatever fairy impelled me to pick it up, THANK YOU SO MUCH BECAUSE THIS BOOK BROKE ME! In a good way, of course!

I was bawling my eyes out a couple of nights I listened to the audio and if I didn’t have work the next day, I would have finished listening to it all night!

This Slow-Burn Romance Worked!
I am not a fan of slow-burn romance but Wait for You was PERFECT as a slow-burn romance. I immediately knew something was wrong with Avery, the heroine and I liked that the full story wasn’t immediately revealed in the first few chapters. In fact, we find out the full story when she confesses to Cam what really happened to her. And it tore at my heartstrings even more.

The Angst
Angsty romance is something that I don’t usually like but I could not help but fall in love with Avery. Wait for You is told in Avery’s POV and I immediately connected with her. Her inner monologues and off-putting attitude again tugged at my heartstrings (which explains all the tears I shed for her).

Angsty romance just reminds me of myself in college so this book also felt very nostalgic.

Cam is the MAN!
Cameron Hamilton is another type of hero. He is the typical popular, hot guy who always got the girl, until Avery. His persistence was pretty damn amazing because it took him MONTHS to get Avery to go out with him on a real date. Plus, Avery’s emotional baggage was just too over the top that I didn’t think Cam would keep coming back. Not that I blame Avery because she DOES have a LEGIT reason to be wary.

Trigger Warnings
There are three trigger warnings here and Jennifer Armentrout doesn’t shy away from reality. I love how she handled Avery’s situation and I love how she handled Cam’s.

But as a warning, there is rape, attempted suicide, and physical abuse mentioned here, but not in graphic detail.

This book made me wish for the dual POV
Wait for You is told in Avery’s POV only, I kept wishing that I could read Cam’s POV because I wanted to know what he was thinking! I wanted to know why he kept coming back and asking Avery out!

Then Trust in Me came along and I was SOLD.

The Audiobook
Sophie Eastlake narrates Wait for You and she is amazing! I love the vulnerability in her voice when she is speaking as Avery and I also like her male voice. They are deep but do not sound weird to my ears.

It is masterfully narrated and I am happy that Sophie Eastlake is narrating the other books in the series.

I loved this book, so I must warn you to not make the same mistake that I did: DON'T READ THE SECOND BOOK. Leave the MC as they are.
I read the next book, and then I went to this book and opened my eyes to all the flaws and emotional abuse that the MC went through with the main love interest. As we only got her POV in this book, the love interest, Cam, is so charming, and a truly nice guy. But that's what happens when the character is using her rose-color glass and missed all the red flags.
Check CW, and have in mind that might differ from one person to the other. I would recommend reading other books from this author since this isn't her best work. But it's not a bad book.
After reading the second book I can tell for sure that he was a "nice guy" for sure. And I don't want that BS about the publication year, this was gaslighting and emotional abuse in a book.
I'll leave it with 4-stars due to the fact that's what I gave it when I first read it. As a standalone, it was good, it was sneaky about the abuse and gaslighting (which it's terrifying that I didn't notice this when I first read it. It was so subliminal that I don't think the author did it on purpose). This is me trying to be fair, and authentic about my first review of the book.
The gaslighting and abuse are so subtle that you might not even notice, so if that doesn't bother you and you can look past that... you might enjoy it.
But I'm not recommending this book to you.
