A slow and steady but enjoyable read about a young Quaker woman recently immigrated to the US in 1850.
Honor, a Quaker woman, accompanies her sister across the Atlantic. Her sister is looking to start her married life, and Honor is looking to escape. After her sister's unexpected death, Honor must continue on alone. She soon finds herself at odds with her faith, her morals, and her new society. This book is typical Chevalier--beautifully written, evocative, and very informative. If you like her other books, you'll be drawn into this one the same way. I also appreciate Chevalier's gift for understatement and description more after reading some very overwritten books lately.

This book made me happy. It wasn't necessarily a happy book, but I really found myself enjoying it.
I think the only thing that made me a little sad is the "what-ifs" with Donovan. At times I felt like Honor just did whatever she thought she had to do instead of what she wanted to do. With the exception of the Railroad of course. But, I guess that's a Friend thing to do!
