4.5 out of 5 Stars

It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time was an enjoyable read. I loved Adele and Pete.

Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

I thought long and hard about this review. To be honest, this is probably a 3.5 Star Book.
Adele was cute and funny, Pete was Hot and the supporting cast were solid.

So why the shit rating?
This is an Australian Book. With Australian characters, written, I’m fairly sure, by an Australian. Given those facts I absolutely cannot get behind the use of American spelling in this book.
At no stage ever, has an Australian born or even raised child, called their mother mom. It’s Mum. It’s also a mobile phone, a car park, grey, colour, realise, favourite and probably a heap of other things.
Again I say this is an Australian Book with Australian characters. They should be not be saying those things. For the life of me I don’t understand why the author chose this spelling. If she wanted to use American spelling why not just set it in America? To me, it is the height of disrespect to not use Australian spelling and terms. Why bother extolling the beauties of the Sunshine Coast only to spoil it with mom?
I’d be happily reading, then mom would hit and I would literally recoil. I am so incredibly angry about this. It just doesn’t make sense to me, hence the shit rating.

DNF, soooo boring.

I enjoyed this story. It was funny and had an appropriate amount of feels. But the hero got off way too easy. His grovel was pitiful. He jerked her around the whole time and then announces to her parents, "We're getting married". He didn't even tell her "I love you" first! That being said, I enjoyed this author's style and will seek out more of her stuff.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review
"God, I hated the old familiar feeling of guilt. Life would be so much easier if I could hate him, push some of the blame his way. But the truth was, he hadn’t done a damn thing wrong."

Kylie Scott's newest novel, It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time is a standalone contemporary romance and follows twenty five year old Adele Reid as she returns home for the first time in seven years for her fathers wedding… Returns home for the first time since she embarrassed herself on her eighteenth birthday by making a pass at her unrequited childhood crush, who also happened to be her fathers best friend.

Fifteen Years older than her, Pete had been left with a broken nose, a business on the edge of ruin and was just as relieved as everyone else to see Adele leave town. But now she's back and staying in his house.

Adele is intent on just getting through the wedding and keeping things strictly polite but all it takes is seeing him again to bring back all those old feelings.

Written from Adele's point of view, It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time was an engaging and entertaining read.

I adored the natural and fiery chemistry Adele and Pete shared, and loved the use of flashbacks, which allowed you to see how their friendship initially developed and gave greater depth and context to their feelings and motivations.

"With the people he loved, he held back nothing. I’d been on that select list once. Seeing him smile, it was similar to what I’d imagined getting punched in the gut would be like. Lots of pain, with little to no actual fun."

I also loved how quick witted Adele was, with her dry humour and good natured sarcasm regularly making me laugh out loud, and adding excellent balance to Pete's more serious and often slightly more reserved personality.

“That’s good, I guess. Anyway . . . I’m sorry about my comments about your dating life over dinner.”
“Ah, okay. Thanks.”
A grunt.
“Sorry I called you a manwhore.”
He blinked. “You didn’t call me a manwhore.”
“No? Must have just thought it,” I said. “But I’m sure I was wrong and that you’ve had deep and abiding feelings for each and every one of your numerous girlfriends over the many long years. Just out of interest, can you even remember all of their names?”
His shoulders lifted as he exhaled hard. "Yeah alright. I take back my apology." '

Packed with explosive chemistry, witty banter, and charismatic characters, It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time is one of my favourite books of 2018.

Rating: 4.5/5

I had high expectations for this book. After all the title, cover and the blurb spoke of great things. However, it did not live up to my expectations. Not that it was a bad read, but it had the potential to be so much greater.

It Seemed Like a Great Idea at the Time is the latest romance novel by Kylie Scott. It is a slow burn romance featuring an older hero (Pete) and younger heroine (Adele).

The story is told solely from Adele's POV. Anyone familiar with my reviews knows I am a fan of this narration. It allows me to get inside the characters' heads and gain an understanding of their emotions and actions. The story moved between the past and the present, which allowed me to compare Adele's teenage and adult feelings. There was some level of growth, but sometimes her immaturity during her adult years shined through.

I liked Adele, however I thought she was too easy on Pete. After the way he treated her, and his many rejections, she should have made him grovel. I guess it is true when they say love makes you do stupid things.

I could not get a clue as to Pete's feelings as his voice is missing from the story. Pete ran hot and cold making it difficult to pin down his true feelings where Adele is concerned. Even when the story ended, I had a hard time accepting that what he felt was real. He struck me as someone who did not know what he wanted. A player who had no qualms about breaking a woman's heart, Adele's included. A veritable ass. His actions were not that of a forty-year-old man but more like a twenty-year-old boy.

The chemistry between them was nonexistent. I never felt as there were any sparks between them and as such, I had a hard time relating to them as a couple.

There were fun moments, which made me chuckle. Adele's way with words made for funny and interesting conversation.

Conclusion/Recommendation
Overall, this was an entertaining read, but it did not wow me as I had expected

I am biased. Kylie's a mate and the protagonist is named for me. But I loved it.

This was story of unrequited love. The tale of wanting something and not being enough to have it. I am not going to retell the story. Adele and Pete will do that better than I could. I will encourage you to read it. It's that moment that we have all had, you like a guy, become friends but he never takes a step. It's magical when you have an opportunity to re confront those feelings on an adult level.

Pete was so manly, there were things that should have indicated his lack of commitment. He was a 40 year old bachelor for a reason. It would have been silly had he too been pinning away for Adele as they were a part for 7 years.

Overall, the characters were all endearing. I loved Shanti and her warm ways. Kylie always has a way of making every character her book tangible, relatable and familiar.
