Very funny and quirky book. It reminded me a lot of Forest Gump. I listened to the audio, and the narrator did a fabulous job. Especially this one scene towards the end that has several people talking and lots of funny punchlines, he delivered it so perfectly.

Wildly funny, Forrest Gump-esque story about the life of a man who loves vodka and hates politics. I loved how actual historical figures and events were expertly woven with fiction to create such a cohesive and entertaining book. Enjoyable read, I just sadly got sick while reading and just lost a bit of interest in reading the book, so it took me longer to finish this

I’ve had this on my library wish list for a long time. So long that I can’t even remember anymore where I first heard about it. I was excited to finally have the chance to get to it. I listened to the audiobook and it was nothing like I expected it to be, though I’m not sure what I was expecting. All I can think of is Forrest Gump but with more crime and murder, so much more murder, but not in a bad way? I almost stopped listening because I just wasn’t getting it, but I’m glad I held out and finished it because I ended up liking it. Not loving it but definitely liking it.

The premise of this novel is extremely promising and the 100 year old man is a lovable character, yet it is a difficult book to recommend. Much of this comes down to the confusing way in which it is written. Prejudice against Indonesians is also a feature of the plot.
