I really enjoyed this, magical realism is a genre I am also unsure of but often enjoy.
inspiring reflective

Oh, boy.

This story was heavy. It took me 9 days to get through it, not because the text was particularly dense, or the book had a hefty page count, or any of that. I just couldn't read a whole lot at once, because it was dark. It was sad. It was frustrating.

It was important.

Filled with culture and heartbreaking rawness

This whole book starts off with Fab losing her mom, and then completely veers off from that…and then doesn’t circle back to it in the end like is her mom good or nah?
It wrapped me in at first, but then there was way too much happening in too little time. I also didn’t care for the protagonist very much

phenomenal book, immensely enjoyed
it felt really real and raw, different from what I usually read.
I felt connected to the character cuz things like these really happen around here, It didn’t sugar coat anything and i love that about authors

I didn't expect the book to go the way it did, and I'm really choked up right now. I loved this book a lot, loved the complex relationships, the exploration of right vs wrong, how infused with Haitian culture it felt... It was all great, amazing.

Excellent read for my kid book club. The author's note and a few pieces of info we researched helped frame the choices of the protagonist.
