This book is rich. It is full of incredible prose that is a pleasure unto itself. The characters and their relationships to one another are complex. The plot is slow and thick with the complexity of Chiapas state history and the Indigenous people who built the state. This, mixed with a heavy dose of spiritual fervor was a pleasure to read. The processes of the state themselves took on a sacred tone, and the notion of justice was handed down by more than a few gods. I would recommend this to anyone I like.

Fue mi primer acercamiento a Rosario Castellanos y no fue para nada lo que esperaba. Es crudo, es realista y está excelentemente bien escrito. Definitivamente buscaré más de la autora.

The writing itself is gorgeous and she has so many good reflective lines that go to all the issues of society. However, you need CONTEXT for this book and I didn’t have enough. Also serious internalized misogyny so that was less fun.
