This is a pretty standard chicken/fox picture book. There are some elements of counting, but they aren't really repeated often enough to classify the book as a "counting book." Some of the lines are a bit awkward (rhymes not quite right, or number of syllables throwing off the rhythm), so it might take some practice to make this an effective read-aloud. But overall it is a cute, fun story, and it was nice to see the little chicks have some spunk and fight back a little bit!

Rhyming text and beautiful illustrations tell the story of Mama hen and her little chicks as they play in the barnyard and she sits on her egg. They are warned that the fox is on his way, can the mama hen save them? A fun, if a bit involved, group read aloud with lots of repetition.
