[b:The Glass of Lead and Gold|40669656|The Glass of Lead and Gold|Cornelia Funke|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1530286148l/40669656._SY75_.jpg|63226370] was a lovely, heartwarming Christmas story that takes place in an alternative London filled with faeries, lonely orphans and magic.

I really enjoyed how well [a:Cornelia Funke|15873|Cornelia Funke|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1437000100p2/15873.jpg] mixed harsh reality with the softness of magic, and together it became something rare and memorable. Unfortunately, what made me not being able to rate this higher, is the fact that it's so, so short. I would have loved to read this as a full-length novel, or at least a longer novella of around 150-pages. Hopefully [a:Funke|15873|Cornelia Funke|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1437000100p2/15873.jpg] will return to this world and its wonders again. I definitely want to get to know Ofelia more.

Some short stories - set around Christmas, but honestly they don't feel THAT Christmassy - that are set in the Mirror World and the Reckless Series.
None of them had shocking or surprising events in them (if you know the books), but still nice. Also the drawings in this book are very beautiful!

(And apparently the German books has like 6 stories whereas the English version only has one, but it's still registerd here as the same book; so FYI I read the German one)

The stories are lovingly told and testify to the author's fascination with her own world, which gains depth and credibility through this, even if one notices very clearly that they were written at different times, especially the third story "The Violin of Strömkarlen", which I feel was written around the time of the first Mirror World novel. Furthermore, I find it very exciting how art in particular, in the most diverse forms, represents a kind of common thread that runs through all the stories, which underlines the deep logic inherent in the magical objects in the mirror world and thus quite helpfully supports the longer stories in the main parts of the series. Clear recommendation for lovers of the main series, but also fans of the author in general. As a stand-alone book, or starting point for the work of Cornelia Funke, I would not recommend this anthology.
