Poetic invention, it would seem (according to Poe) is not so much invention or impulse than negation, calculation, strict composition and blue-printing. I would have to agree. Oh the pain of a comma that just won't sit, a word short-syllabled, a line clumsy and tuneless! 'The Raven', if nothing else, is an extraordinary exercise in poetic aural/oral control. I've been sitting on my bed for the past hour just reciting it over and over and over again... ahh....
