this was enjoyable and contained lots of good information, but it felt like the author never quite knew what she wanted to say about influencers and influencer culture. I also thought she was maybe too gentle with her subjects at times, to the detriment of getting at more interesting and fully developed points about influencers.

The initial spark was the idea that ‘influencers matter’ and McNeal is right. She focuses on 3 influencers: 1 Utah mom influencer, 1 fashion (and later mommy) blogger, and 1 active/outdoorsy influencer. Because of the prevalence of the first 2 on socials, we didn’t see as much of the third. I wanted more of her.

This scratches the surface of most of the areas of influencing that we’re familiar with. McNeal does a good overview. The impact on the families, how much to share, children and privacy, how content is monetized, different kinds of freebies, branching into more stable areas of income.

There are huge areas that don’t get touched on. What about animal influencers? What happens when the animal passes? What about making the switch from photo to video content? I’d love to find a deeper dive. The 2 influencers McNeal focuses on were burning out. They were ready to be done. Who is going to replace them? Bachelor contestants are starting to lose power to become instant influencers. Is the end nigh?

Swipe Up is an interesting and engaging look at a small part of this big story. Not all there is but a fun place to start. If anyone knows about other books on the subject, let me know. McNeal does a good job narrating the audiobook. I’d recommend it. 4/5

A very insightful look into influencers and how much work actually goes into the pretty pictures we see on Instagram. The influencers interviewed did not hide anything nor did they try to make everything look oh so pretty and perfect.

Simple synopsis: this is a book about the lives of influencers.

This book was so freaking fascinating. From finding out how the job of influencer came to be, to where it is today, I found myself so interested in learning more. I really loved this one, minus learning how much non book influencers make, because y’all know we ain’t making anything as bookstagrammers! I definitely learned more about the industry, and I know there are some aspects that I just have no desire to do, so book influencing it is for me! I did this one on audio and really loved the audio narration as well.
