This is a pretty good "gathering a ragtag group of heroes" chapter of a superhero story.

Harbinger continues to impress. Here we meet two new characters, both of which are fairly interesting. Their powers aren't unique by any stretch, but they tie in perfectly with their backstories and origins. I found the more mature origin for Charlene/Flamingo to be extremely refreshing, since the big two generally shy away from even the slightest of sexual themes. And Torque's origin was really well executed too, since his power is so intertwined with his disability and escapist fantasies. As for previously introduced characters, Kris proves to be one of the stars of the show after not impressing me at all initially. She's extremely cunning, and without her the rest of the team would fall apart. Faith is just a pure delight, and I can't wait to read her solo series. And of course Peter Stanchek continues to be one of the best flawed heroes in recent memory. I found his drug addict past to be refreshing in the same vein as Charlene's origin; especially the candid way that writer Joshua Dysart writes about drugs, instead of the overly conservative way Marvel and DC tend to handle it. Serious props to Valiant for handling drugs and sexuality maturely and unashamedly.

All in all a great volume with strong writing and strong art. Seriously strong art, especially in issue 10. It's also worth noting that the changes in artists are well handled, unlike Marvel's constant revolving door of artists. The artist changes are used well to capitalize on the style of story being told, and the same colorist is kept for most of it, which really helps keep the art cohesive throughout despite any changes in penciller. Kudos Valiant, for handling that so well.
