Ich habe in einer Zeitschrift gelesen, dass Hemingway die Frauen gehasst haben soll, da seine Mutter eine sehr aktive Feministin war und ihn in der Kindheit dazu zwang, Frauenkleidung zu tragen. Diese Theorie erschien mir zuerst seltsam, aber nachdem ich dieses Buch gelesen habe, habe ich verstanden: Hemingway schreibt gut über die Erfahrungen im Krieg... und nur darüber.
Könnt ihr mir bitte sagen, wo Frauen wie Maria zu finden sind? Warum bin ich nie einer begegnet? Hat Hemingway in seinem Roman über den Bürgerkrieg in Spanien versucht, kurz, plump und ungeschickt eine Art „Romeo und Julia“ zu integrieren? Wenn er das ohnehin nicht konnte, warum hat er es versucht?
Das ist der dritte Roman von Hemingway, den ich lese, nach "Fiesta: The Sun Also Rises" und "Der alte Mann und das Meer". Beide habe ich ziemlich gerne gelesen, deshalb dachte ich, dass mir auch dieses Buch gefallen würde... aber nein.
Hat das Buch wirklich die drei Tage beschrieben? Für mich haben sie eine Ewigkeit gedauert. Meistens ging es um sehr chaotische Gedanken verschiedener Charaktere, die auch die ganze Zeit sinnlos sich gewechselt haben, aber wofür?
Mir hat nur gefallen, wie Hemingway die spanische Mentalität beschrieben hat, mit Phrasen, Traditionen, Sprüchen, usw. Auch interessant war es, die Hintergrundgeschichten von Pablo und Robert zu lesen... und das war es.
Lieber Hemingway, hoffentlich wirst du nicht weiterhin versuchen, Frauen in deine Handlung einzubinden, wenn es nicht passt.

Раніше мені було здебільшого нудно читати книжки про війну. Мені здавалося, що всі вони говорять одне й те саме: війна — це страшно. Проте без особистого досвіду війни я не мала засобів сприйняти тексти, які читала.
Наприклад, зараз я звернула увагу на те, що головний герой поїхав до іншої країни брати участь у громадянській війні. Він не мав цього робити, для нього на кону не стояло його життя або безпека близьких, і все ж таки він прийняв рішення поїхати воювати в Іспанію, до якої проникся любов'ю за попередні, мирні роки. Я почала думати про іноземних добровольців, які прибули до моєї країни, і ця паралель допомогла мені характеризувати головного героя як людину. Він занурюється в роздуми про доцільність власного перебування в Іспанії, про відразу до вбивства, і я побоювалася, що він дійде банальних висновків про пацифізм, рівність і братерство. Проте людина, яка переживає війну, не може дозволити собі такого світогляду, і протагоніст цілком логічно усвідомлює, що не вбиваючи ворога, він наражає на небезпеку всіх, із ким встиг познайомитися.
Без війни я б ніколи не звернула увагу на сцену, коли двоє персонажів обговорюють майбутній контрнаступ, про який ніхто не мав знати, і тут виявляється, що про нього відомо всім, включно із журналістами. Ці двоє персонажів нарікають, що журналістів треба розстріляти разом із ворогом, бо вони не можуть тримати рота на замку. Читаючи ці рядки, я не могла не проводити паралелі з реальним життям.
Загалом усі мої позитивні враження від роману зводяться до того, що через включенння в контекст війни окремі репліки або роздуми здалися мені дуже влучними й вони ніби частково описували реальність, у якій я перебуваю зараз.

Hemingway, so ungodly boring and dry, made this a difficult read. I expected more ACTION! This long-ass book took place over 4 days! Mediocrity! Anytime we were away from Robert Jordan was a respite.
I read till the end hoping and praying that we would see his death.I'll unhappily settle for his leg being torn and torqued, I guess.
There wasn't even good romance! Sure, there was sex. Maybe even good sex, who knows? But Maria pretty easily left Jordan for her own safety. In a novel, a character can only SAY so much, but their actions show you their real motivations. She wanted to live. Marriage be damned. Plot be damned!
I can't believe this was recommended to me by a friend. We truly have differing tastes in what makes a good story. Historical relevancy or no, do not read this book if you don't have to. Now that I'm finished, I'm glad to be rid of it.

Loved this book a lot more than I thought I would, especially since my only previous exposure to Hemingway was The Old Man and the Sea (which I have... not learned to love quite yet). The austere, matter-of-fact prose and narrative style that I found so boring in The Old Man serves this novel exceptionally well, helping to build tension and to immerse the reader in Robert Jordan's similarly matter-of-fact reflections. Although slow in some places, each scene contributes to the larger narrative--masterfully constructed and well-paced.
Given the time period--as well as the kinds of characters Hemingway portrays--expect some Misogyny Lite™, as well as Romaphobia and frequent use of the g*psy slur.
The only issue I take with the writing itself is Hemingway's habit of head hopping--changing points of view within the same chapter, briefly and without warning. Although the reflections of these new perspective characters are legitimately interesting and, in some cases, arguably indispensable to the whole, the sudden shifts occasionally pulled me out of the story. If this had been a regular aspect of the entire book, perhaps it wouldn't have been quite so jarring; given that the first half is almost entirely Jordan's perspective, however, I found the more frequent perspective changes in the second half incredibly off-putting.
That said, if you can fully immerse yourself in Jordan's perspective, you'll find it's a powerful one. Despite his characteristic dryness, he's by no means a bland protagonist. In fact, he might be one of my new favorite protagonists of all time--even though he doesn't experience a classic character arc. His relationship with Maria fell a little bit flat for me, but I can overlook it as a secondary aspect of the main storyline.
Sobbed like a baby the entire last chapter. 8/10 would recommend.
