Well. I like the style, but there was no complexity to the story. There were a couple of continuity errors and I didn't like the way the characters' "filler" actions were recycled so often. I'm not sure if I want to keep reading the next one.

On the surface this is just a mish-mash of typical fantasy staples with elves & dwarves rubbing shoulders with the human empire that happens to be a superficial copy of the Roman Empire with none of the historical context. If there was anything below that surface, I didn't see it in the first two books.

Still, if you think it would be fun to read carefully detailed descriptions of Roman legionary tactics in a world where there is no logical reason for them to exist, this book will deliver. Maybe it would have been enough to impress me if I hadn't read The Warrior of Rome series a few months prior which does the same so much better.

Rome meets fantasy

Rome meets the fantasy world! Great story and characters! Looking forward to book 2. Great historical fantasy. Keep up the good work.

I read the first half and listened to the second half.

I do not understand this book’s high rating. It is slow, with little action (underwhelming action). And the plot points are weak.

Page turning, intriguing, and some - what I hope are - rookie mistakes.
Let me lead off with: I will be buying the next book in the series.
It appears this is the first book Edelheit has written? I sincerely hope that he has learned to edit himself: he repeatedly says or describes a thing in multiple ways. I think the worst was six times over half a dozen pages, I would have to re-read it to be sure, but please please PLEASE don't ask me to.
I am glad I stuck with it, because the story is interesting, and Edelheit has a good voice and a flair with words, the characters have life, and the situations feel real.
To repeat myself ;p - I look forward to the next book, but hope it is better edited.

Ever read a book and know before you finish that you are in for the long haul. If the author wants to write 25 books into the series I will read them. If every side character gets a series of his own I'm there. If this epic adventure takes on truly epic proportions I am ok with that. It wasn't perfect. I haven't come across a perfect book yet. However, it was enough to get the hooks into me. Stiger is a classic hero who isn't seeking glory. He just wants to live a useful life and uphold the honor of the empire and his family. I'm a bit in love with him and his sneer already.

I went into Stiger's Tigers actually expecting a Roman novel, what I got instead was a mix of military fantasy and epic fantasy that had some Roman sprinkled in, but a decent bit of a high fantasy identity too. I enjoyed the characters in this book, I especially enjoy that Stiger is a bit of a hard captain, when I read him I imagine it's what the Black Company would have been like if we got to read from the Captain's POV in the first book rather than Croaker's. The military elements really did it for me but some of the more high fantasy elements were hit or miss for me. All in all a very enjoyable book though with a fun world, story, and a well done military journey.
