It was over too quickly! Loved Cari. Hope there's more stories featuring her to follow.
Didn't get far though this book before I decided I really didn't want to be in the head of a serial killer like this. Haven't read Thomas Harris before, but liked the movie 'Manhunter' years ago, and this book starts out (that's as far as I read) in a similar kind of vein. Guess my tastes have changed somewhat over the years.
Thank you to Netgalley for the free copy in exchange for an honest review. I have tried my hardest not to compare this too closely with the Hannibal series despite sourcing back to the same author but all the same I find my mouth parched for more in this good (but not great) novel.
Cari Mora is a really interesting character I want to know more about and Harris maintains the trend of intriguing villains here, too. The rest of the characters are bland to me and the first half of the book hard to follow. The story definitely picks up after that but lacks the same cat-and-mouse dynamic I loved in Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling. Some really gory moments I was a fan of and definitely markers of Thomas Harris’ writing, just not as fully realised as I would like.

Yikes! Not a fan of this one. Wayyyy to gory and gross and I can't believe I even finished it. I don't recommend it. Pretty sad, since I've liked his other books.
Poorly written solid action. If he hadn’t written silence of the lambs this would have been a fine book but I had unmet expectations
The book is so slow. I could barely get through it. It was definitely not for me and I'm glad I was able to put it on super speed to get to the more interesting parts. Overall, a mediocre book
I want to preface this by saying this is not a terrible book. It’s not even a bad novel. It just...lacks. It lacks the characterization, depth and overall plot structure to be a good story. I have always been a fan of Harris, and his book, “Silence of the Lambs” is transcendent. However, the story seemed to run out of steam about 2/3 of the way through. I was left wanting so much more. Cari, our main character, was written fairly well. I cared for her, wanted her to triumph over the evil Hans-Peter. However, the other characters were 2-D at best. Hans himself was a weak “bad” guy, a watered down Hannibal if you will. Terry, the detective, was thin at best. I do recommend the book to Harris lovers...just with caution. This is not his best work.

I’m a huge fan of Thomas Harris, but this book just fell flat for me. I liked Cari as a character but I think the plot was boring. I felt that the character development could have been much better. As disgusting as the main villain was I didn’t find him particularly scary. Quick read though.
